Introduction

The Afghanistan Women’s Movement for Equality is an independent, advocacy based civil society organization officially registered in Canada. It works to defend the rights of Afghan women, the right to education for girls, human equality, freedom, social justice, and human dignity.

The organization emerged during one of the most challenging periods in Afghanistan’s contemporary history, when millions of Afghan women and girls faced severe restrictions on their education, social participation, and fundamental human rights.

The movement was founded in Kabul following the political changes in Afghanistan and the return of the Taliban to power in 2021. It was established by human rights defenders, protesting women, civil society activists, and male supporters of gender equality. At a time when Afghan society was increasingly moving toward silence, exclusion, and repression of women, the founders chose resistance through peaceful advocacy, justice, and human rights work.

From its earliest days, the movement has been committed to peaceful civil activism, awareness-raising, and advocacy for women’s rights. Peaceful protests, public gatherings, and campaigns in support of girls’ education formed the foundation of its early work, despite severe security threats and political pressure.

On November 3, 2022, the movement attempted to formally expand its activities through an official gathering. However, the event was raided by Taliban intelligence forces. Several founding members were arrested, threatened, and subjected to pressure and violence. Despite these challenges, the movement continued its work in difficult and restricted conditions.

As pressure increased, many members were forced into exile. As a result, the movement expanded its activities beyond Afghanistan, reaching Pakistan and later Western countries. The organization began advocating internationally, bringing the voices of Afghan women to human rights institutions, media, and global civil society.

Through continued efforts, the Afghanistan Women’s Movement for Equality was officially registered in Canada, strengthening its legal and organizational structure. This registration marked a significant milestone, enabling broader engagement in education, media, advocacy, and international human rights work.

Today, as a Canadian registered organization, it continues to advocate for Afghan women and girls through education programs, awareness campaigns, media engagement, digital platforms, and international advocacy.

Vision

The Afghanistan Women’s Movement for Equality envisions an Afghanistan where women and girls live in freedom, dignity, equality, and security. A society where no woman is silenced, no girl is denied education, and every individual enjoys equal access to fundamental human rights and opportunities.

We envision a future where Afghan women fully participate in education, leadership, social life, and decision making without fear, discrimination, or oppression. Our vision is a just, inclusive, and peaceful society grounded in human rights, gender equality, justice, and dignity for all.

We aspire to a future where women are recognized not as victims of oppression, but as powerful agents of change, leadership, development, and peace.
